Anne Corrigan’s Garden: Fantasy Retreat
When guests visit Anne Corrigan’s rear garden they remark that they have been transported to a faraway woodland retreat
– with a twist. With only 20-25 feet between homes, it is truly amazing that this special little southern garden is so serene and unique. With surprises around every corner, Annie (pictured, right) demonstrates how serious gardening can also be fun.
“What I enjoy about working in Annie’s garden is her willingness to try new ideas, or pots, or plants, or art that may encourage a chuckle from a visitor strolling along her rear garden path. There are times we sit over a Diet Coke and laugh about introducing an unusual animal to the yard or adding a frilly hat and scarf to the giraffe,” remarks local Chapel Hill garden designer, Keith Larkin. “Gardens should lighten the soul, allow people to get lost in nature, and at best be sprinkled with a bit of humor.” Other whimsical twists include a hopscotch path created from Pennsylvania bluestones, tropical fish rising out of a meandering dry creek bed, and dueling monkeys playing checkers.
