Diane and Art Belden’s house is fronted by terraces brilliant with spring bloom and Japanese maples. Behind the house a broad curving lawn bordered by flowerbeds is extended by an expansive view over the golf course. A peaceful shaded area to one side provides a major focal point with a huge urn fountain amid trees and evergreen shrubs.
Belden Garden: Comments from landscape designer Anita Hicks
The property was defined before the house was built by the 2 mature pecan trees in the front yard that were trees from the DuBose family property. Bartlett Tree Service cares for them, as they are a treasure and suffered from the construction, and we are hoping they will still have a long life ahead.
Diane and Art Belden asked me to work for them after admiring other gardens I had designed. Diane expressed her desire to have layered colorful borders in the English garden style, so I started to add beds around the perimeter of the entire property, and I maintain the landscape every week.
We hit a setback last fall when voles, which had been a mild nuisance up until that point, multiplied at an alarming rate and started to do serious damage to plants that had been established for several years, especially roses. I began to fight them with every weapon, and still do. They are a serious pest. I plant with Perma-til, I set traps, I bait them, repel them - whatever I can think of.
As far as the details of the design and plant choices, Diane has contributed items that she wished to use in the garden such as birdbaths and furniture, and we collaborated on the choice of the water feature. They have given me freedom to implement the flow of the landscape, the beds, the materials, and plants as I wish. It has been great fun and is still a work-in-process. They are wonderful to work for because they give me creative freedom and can support the type of custom work involved. This type of garden is not possible in our climate without generous water use. We hope that the current water restrictions will not offer us another serious setback.
