Barry Home

A Transplanted Chalet

Gracia Barry
1832 North Lakeshore Drive

D
ark wood and steeply peaked roofs give this waterfront home the look of a Swiss Chalet in a southern setting.  A circular drive dominates the front area, shaded by dogwoods Barry Lake and other trees underplanted with azaleas, and dominated by a large banana tree.  A flagstone path leads around the left side of the house past a foundation planting of massed aucubas and a stone-filled dry stream along the property border.  The very peaceful back yard is sheltered by tall ivy-clad pines, and a large redbud with blossoming branches provides a colorful focus.  The open view of the lake can be enjoyed both from the deck and from the back lawn, rimmed by plantings of hellebores, pansies and violas, with a small group of viburnum trees. A dramatic weeping willow on the lake shore frames the view and draws the eye to a wooden jetty with rustic chairs.
