Developed in the 1940's and 50's, Chapel Hill's Lake Forest neighborhood offers a combination of rustic charm and sophisticated plantings. Wooded hills, lakefront views and winding brooks provide a unified setting for a variety of homes and gardens. Flowering trees and shrubs are underplanted with bulbs, azaleas and other spring delights. Tucked away in this sheltering landscape, the eight Lake Forest gardens on this tour offer a nature preserve and sculptures from the dramatic to the whimsical as well as striking water features and unusual specimen plants.
The newly completed Visitor Education Center at the North Carolina Botanical Garden, with its many novel green features, provides an additional attraction for this year's tour, plus amenities such as the Garden's annual plant sale.
